How many studs do I need for a wall?
A 10-foot wall at 16-inch on-center needs about 9 studs in the field — call it 10–11 once you add corners and an opening. The shortcut most framers use: at 16-inch spacing, plan on roughly one stud per foot of wall, then add the plates. Here's the formula, a chart, and a worked example with a door in it.
The formula
The evenly spaced "field" studs come from the wall length and the spacing:
Studs = (wall length in inches ÷ spacing) + 1
For a 10-ft wall at 16" on-center: 120 ÷ 16 = 7.5, round up to 8, plus 1 = 9 studs. The "+1" is the stud that caps the far end. Then add the framing extras below.

- Corners: add 2–3 studs per corner to form a nailable, insulatable corner.
- Wall intersections (T's): add a stud where another wall ties in.
- Doors & windows: add 2–4 per opening for king and jack (trimmer) studs, plus a header and short cripple studs.
- Waste: add about 10–15% for bad boards you set aside and offcuts.
A worked example: 16-ft partition with one door
Say you're framing a 16-ft non-load-bearing partition in a basement or garage, with one corner and one 32-inch door:
- Field studs: 192 ÷ 16 = 12, + 1 = 13
- Corner: + 2
- Door opening: 2 kings + 2 jacks + header stock + 2 cripples ≈ + 6
- Total ≈ 21 studs, plus 48 linear ft of plate (three 16-ft boards, or six 8-footers)
Notice the door pushed the count well past the one-stud-per-foot shortcut — the rule of thumb is fine for a blank wall, but walls with openings deserve the itemized count. (Some jacks and cripples come out of offcut, which the waste allowance absorbs.)
And the plates
Walls also need horizontal plates: one bottom plate and a doubled top plate. That's about three times the wall length in plate stock — a 10-ft wall needs roughly 30 linear feet, or three 10-ft 2×4s (plus a little extra for splices). One rule that matters: any plate sitting on a concrete slab must be pressure-treated (or isolated with a foam gasket), or it will wick moisture and rot.
Which lumber to buy
- "Precut studs" (92⅝ in) are made for standard 8-ft walls: stud + three plate thicknesses = 97⅛ in, which finishes to an 8-ft ceiling after drywall. Grab these rather than trimming 8-ft boards — they're often cheaper too.
- Stud grade SPF is fine for wall framing; sight down each board and set the badly crowned or twisted ones aside for blocking and cripples.
- 2×6 instead of 2×4 for exterior walls that need deeper insulation, and for walls hiding drain plumbing.
What it costs
Stud-grade 2×4×8s typically run $3–$5 each (lumber prices swing — check the shelf tag the week you build). The 16-ft example above — about 21 studs plus 6 plate boards, call it 27 sticks — is roughly $80–$135 in lumber, plus $15–$25 for 16d nails or structural screws and shims. Framing a wall is one of the cheapest transformations per dollar in DIY; the drywall to cover this wall costs about as much as the frame — the drywall calculator counts those sheets.
One safety note: these counts are for non-load-bearing partitions. If a wall might carry the floor or roof above — or you're cutting into one that does — sizing headers and posts is engineering, not arithmetic; confirm with your building department or an engineer, and pull the permit where required.
