Estimating concrete and masonry

Concrete is all about volume: multiply length × width × thickness and convert to cubic yards. Once you know the yardage, you can decide between bagged mix and a ready-mix truck, and size any rebar reinforcement. Masonry — brick, block, and stucco — is estimated by wall area, with allowances for mortar and waste. For load-bearing or tall structures, always check your local code.

Which calculator do I need?

Plan the whole assembly, not just the units

Concrete and masonry both rely on what's under and behind them. A slab wants a compacted gravel sub-base and usually rebar or wire mesh; a retaining wall needs a gravel base and drainage behind it; and stucco over wood needs lath and building paper. Order a little extra of everything — concrete spills, bricks break, and running short mid-pour or mid-course is the one thing you want to avoid. For anything load-bearing or over about 3–4 ft tall, confirm footings and reinforcement against your local code.

How do I estimate concrete?
Volume = length × width × thickness, converted to cubic yards (÷27 from cubic feet). The calculator also gives bag counts or you can order ready-mix.
Do I need rebar in a slab?
Often yes for crack control, and always for structural slabs. Confirm spacing and bar size with your local code.
Bags or ready-mix concrete?
Bags suit small jobs like posts and pads; for about a cubic yard or more, ready-mix delivery is cheaper and far less work — roughly 45 80-lb bags equal one yard.
How many bricks or blocks per square foot?
About 6.75 modular bricks, or 1.125 standard 8×8×16 blocks, per square foot of wall face — before a waste allowance.
How tall can I build a retaining wall myself?
Usually 3–4 ft for a segmental block wall; taller walls (or any with a slope or driveway above) need geogrid, engineering, and a permit.
