Weeds, washout & longevity: the deciding factor

This is where polymeric earns its price. Loose regular sand leaves the joints as an open, damp seedbed — perfect for wind-blown weed seeds and for ants that tunnel and push the sand out in little volcanoes. It also has nothing holding it down, so a downpour or a pressure-washer flushes it out and you're refilling. Polymeric sand, once swept in and misted per the label, cures into a firm but slightly flexible fill that locks the joints, sheds water, and denies weeds and insects the loose medium they need. It isn't magic — seeds can still root in surface grit, and a bad install (wet pavers, too much or too little sand, or over/under-watering) can cause haze or weak joints — but a properly done polymeric job is far lower maintenance for years.

Installation differences

Regular sand is forgiving: sweep it into the joints, tamp, top up, done. Polymeric demands more discipline, and skipping steps is how people get a hazy film or crumbling joints:

  • Bone-dry pavers. Any moisture on the paver faces sets the binder as a haze that's hard to remove. Work on a dry day with rain-free hours ahead.
  • Sweep in, then compact so the sand settles deep into the joints, then top up and sweep again to the right level (just below the paver chamfer).
  • Blow or sweep every grain off the paver surface before watering — this is the step people rush, and it's what prevents haze.
  • Mist, don't flood. Follow the label's watering sequence exactly; too much water floats the binder up, too little leaves it uncured.
