What size air conditioner do I need?

The quick rule: about 20 BTU per square foot of room area. So a 300 sq ft room needs roughly 6,000 BTU, a 500 sq ft room about 10,000 BTU, and a 1,000 sq ft space about 20,000 BTU. Start from the room's floor area and the per-square-foot baseline:

  • BTU per hour = room area (sq ft) × 20 BTU/sq ft
  • Tons of cooling = BTU ÷ 12,000

Why bigger isn't better

A right-sized system runs in longer, steadier cycles that hold the temperature and dehumidify properly.
